Annual Core 1 Darwin Day Lecture by Marilyn Fogel: "The Evolution of Climate and Ecosystems in the Outback of Australia: Can Humans Change Continental Climate?"

Date:
February 10, 2017 - 3:30pm to 5:00pm
Friday, Feb. 10 3:30 - 5 p.m. Lakireddy Auditorium (COB1 102) Annual Core 1 Darwin Day Lecture by Professor Marilyn Fogel "The Evolution of Climate and Ecosystems in the Outback of Australia: Can Humans Change Continental Climate?" Australia’s climate today is hot and dry in the Outback interior, but over the past 150,000 years, it was much wetter and temperate. What caused the change in its continental climate? Fogel’s talk will show how the influx of humans into Australia 55,000 years ago coincided with ecosystem changes throughout much of the continent. Her studies are based on more than 20 years of research using fossil eggshells that have been collected on numerous field trips. Fogel will explain how her research evolved (and what Charles Darwin thought of Australia) and will discuss how simple landscape changes effected by humans can profoundly influence climate. Fogel is Wilbur W. Mayhew Endowed Professor of Geoecology and director of the EDGE Institute at UC Riverside. As her former UC Merced colleagues and students know, she is an internationally recognized scientist renowned for her work in biogeochemistry, paleontology and astrobiology. Following the lecture, cake will be served in honor of Charles Darwin's birthday.
