UC AGEP (Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate)
UC Merced is a member of the University of California’s Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (UC AGEP), a partnership among the ten campuses of the University of California and the National Science Foundation (NSF). The goal of this partnership is to increase the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students who acquire doctoral degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and ultimately enter the professoriate.

AGEP Summer Research Program
The Graduate Division administers the AGEP Summer Research Program, a paid, ten-week, intense, mentored summer enrichment experience. AGEP scholars will be paired with a faculty member who shares similar research interests and work alongside them on a current project. Here are some reasons why you should be part of the AGEP Summer Research Program:
• AGEP Scholars receive a $3,000 stipend
• Hands-on laboratory experience with a faculty mentor
• Graduate school preparation workshops (including GRE test preparation, “How to Prepare and Apply for Doctoral Programs,” etc.)
• Seminars on academic life, its responsibilities and rewards
• Research skills seminars and writing workshops
• Chance to form life-long connections with students like yourself
• Field trips to world renowned research laboratories
• Conference travel funding opportunities
Program Eligibility and Requirements
• Must be in Sophomore or Junior year in college
• Minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA
• Must be U.S. Citizen or permanent resident of U.S.
• Demonstrated interest in pursuing a doctoral degree
• Applicants must provide the names of at least two UCM faculty member with whom they would like to conduct research
• Must be available for the full duration of the ten-week summer research program
How to Apply?
The following materials are needed to complete the application. All application materials must be submitted by April 6, 2009.
• AGEP Summer Research Program application form
• Personal statement discussing educational goals, research experience, research area of interest and future professional objectives
• One unofficial transcript from your current institution
• Two letters of recommendation from faculty members at your current college or university
• Names of two potential UC Merced faculty research mentors
