Welcome Message

Marjorie Zatz, Vice Provost and Graduate Dean, and Professor

Welcome to graduate education at UC Merced!

Graduate school is one of the most exciting periods in a scholar’s career. It is a time when students transition from absorbing information and learning skills, to making lasting contributions to human knowledge. The friendships and collaborations you make in graduate school last a lifetime, and at UC Merced you will find a supportive and inclusive community of graduate peers with shared interests.

As the first new American research university of the 21st century, UC Merced continues the University of California’s tradition of providing students a world-class education. To this, we add our distinctive blend of small academic programs, interdisciplinary research opportunities, and personalized attention from award-winning faculty.

UC Merced is characterized by a large number of young, innovative faculty, many of whom have received national and international recognition in the form of prestigious NSF, NIH and DARPA early career awards. Faculty and students come to UC Merced to solve real world problems, forge legacies in California’s Central Valley, and contribute to the “esprit de corps” of a new campus of the University of California system.

Our dynamic mix of disciplinary and interdisciplinary graduate programs span the natural and social sciences, engineering, and the humanities. From the Sierra Nevada and Health Sciences Research Institutes, to the Center for Humanities and the Advanced Solar Technologies Institute, UC Merced is known for cutting-edge research and scholarship. Significant new graduate training grants from NASA and National Institutes of Health are just a few of the ways in which the hallmarks of graduate education at UC Merced — research excellence, commitment to diversity, and interdisciplinarity — converge. We welcome talented students from across the nation and around the world to join us as we engage in creative scholarship and research at the forefront of new discoveries.

So start your journey right here. Browse the Graduate Division and graduate group websites. Arrange a visit to our campus, and be sure to save time to visit nearby Yosemite National Park. Talk with our faculty, our students, and our staff. Find out what it’s like to be part of history in the making.

I look forward to welcoming you in person!
