Making Waves in Water Research: Shelby Defeo's Journey at UC Merced

Graduate student Shelby DefeoIn the realm of water resources research at UC Merced, Shelby Defeo stands out as a passionate and dedicated graduate student. Their journey to this field began not in a classroom, but in the real world, through a transformative experience with AmeriCorps that would shape their academic and professional future.

From AmeriCorps to Academia

Shelby's path to graduate studies was illuminated by their time in AmeriCorps, where they witnessed firsthand the stark realities of water inequality across the United States. This experience was more than just an eye-opener; it was a call to action.

"I saw the inequality and fragility of water systems in the U.S. and became impassioned to get involved," Shelby reflects. This revelation sparked a fire within them, driving their decision to pursue advanced studies in water resources.

When it came time to choose a graduate program, UC Merced stood out for several reasons. Shelby was drawn by the caliber of research being conducted, the expertise of their potential advisor, and perhaps most importantly, the vibrant community that defines the campus. "I chose Merced because of my advisor, the research being done here, and the amazing community of folks that make Merced what it is!" they enthusiastically share.

Mentorship: A Cornerstone of Success

At UC Merced, Shelby found more than just academic opportunities. They found invaluable mentorship that has been instrumental in shaping their graduate journey. When asked about their most influential mentor, Shelby doesn't hesitate to name Naivy Rodal, a fellow graduate student who recently completed her Ph.D.

"My most influential mentor at UC Merced has been a graduate student who was a year ahead of me, Naivy Rodal, who just recently defended her P.h.D," Shelby explains. "Naivy has been influential in my graduate career as a mentor in the lab, a huge support with field work, and a friend along the way."

This mentorship highlights the collaborative and supportive environment at UC Merced, where peer-to-peer learning and support play crucial roles in student success.

Tackling Environmental Challenges

graduate student Shelby Defeo in the fieldShelby's current research project addresses a critical environmental issue with far-reaching implications. They are focusing on techniques for mercury remediation, a problem that has its roots in California's Gold Rush era but continues to impact water bodies and communities today.

"Mercury is a problem in California water bodies, and it is often traced back to the Gold Rush," Shelby elaborates. "As a contaminant, mercury is difficult to manage but important to consider, since the communities most affected by it are subsistence fisher groups, such as Indigenous communities and immigrants."

This research not only demonstrates Shelby's commitment to environmental science but also their awareness of the social implications of environmental issues. By focusing on a contaminant that disproportionately affects vulnerable communities, Shelby's work bridges the gap between scientific research and social equity.

Beyond the Lab: Community Engagement

Shelby's commitment to making a difference extends beyond their academic pursuits. They take particular pride in their involvement with Central Valley Pride in Merced, a local LGBTQIA+ organization. This engagement reflects their holistic approach to being a graduate student – one that values community connection as much as academic achievement.

"I am particularly proud of my work with Central Valley Pride in Merced," Shelby shares. "It is really important to me to be an active member of the community I live in and to expand my connections beyond the university. I'm proud of the many hours I've put in to further the organization's mission and providing support to many wonderful community members."

This involvement not only enriches Shelby's personal experience but also strengthens the bonds between UC Merced and the broader Merced community.

Looking to the Future

Shelby's journey at UC Merced exemplifies the university's commitment to fostering research that addresses real-world challenges while nurturing well-rounded individuals who contribute meaningfully to their communities. Their work in mercury remediation has the potential to impact environmental policy and practice, particularly in protecting vulnerable communities from environmental hazards.

As they continue their studies and community work, Shelby is poised to make significant contributions to both water resource management and social equity. Their story is a testament to the power of combining academic excellence with community engagement, and how personal experiences can shape a meaningful and impactful career path.

Shelby's journey serves as an inspiration, showing how passion, mentorship, rigorous research, and community involvement can come together to address some of society's most pressing environmental and social challenges. As they progress in their academic and professional career, Shelby is undoubtedly a rising star to watch in the field of water resources and environmental justice.
