Discover Graduate Studies in Environmental Systems at UC Merced

UC Merced Graduate Division

Greetings,

UC Merced provides students the University of California's distinctive world-class education, while adding a special blend of small academic programs, interdisciplinary research and personalized attention from award-winning faculty.
UC Merced professors and researchers have acquired more than $185.7 million in grants and contracts, one of the highest per-capita in the country. With more than 400 graduate students and a rapidly growing graduate student population, it is no wonder UC Merced is attracting the best and brightest scholars from all over the world. UC Merced provides competitive financial support and resources. About 95 percent of our graduate students receive funding in the form of fellowships, teaching assistantships (TA), and graduate student researcher (GSR) assistantships.

The Environmental Systems (M.S., Ph.D.) graduate program trains students with knowledge and skills to tackle the most challenging problems facing our planet – water, soil, climate, energy, and resources. Through understanding the Earth as an integrated system of atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere that intersects human society, ES students are uniquely poised to address critical research needs of the environment and its sustainability. Graduates of our program are prepared for careers in academia, research, government, and industry that integrate expertise from across engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences. This year, faculty are particularly interested in recruiting students in the areas of ecological genetics, paleo-ecology, population genetics, and biodiversity; biogeochemistry, environmental geochemistry, and isotope ecology; hydrology, environmental engineering; renewable energy and sustainability; analytics and modeling; applied math and statistics; applied climatology; plant and forest ecology, conservation, resource management, environmental decision-making.

I also encourage you to visit the Graduate Division’s web page, http://graduatedivision.ucmerced.edu, to learn more about our innovative academic programs, financial support, student services, professional development opportunities, and important information about the application process. While you’re there, explore our faculty pages to learn about the exciting research currently taking place.

We look forward to seeing you join our graduate program in Environmental Systems (M.S., Ph.D.). If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,
