From STEM Enthusiast to Sustainability Champion: Jose's Academic Journey
Jose Martinez's path to becoming a sustainability researcher at UC Merced began with a lifelong passion for STEM. "For as long as I can remember, I always had an interest in the STEM field," Jose recalled. This interest blossomed as he began helping others understand math fundamentals, creating and delivering statistics workshops at his local community college. These experiences ignited a desire to delve deeper into the field and contribute to solving complex problems.
Choosing UC Merced: A Hub for Sustainability Research
While exploring various research topics during his undergraduate and graduate studies, Jose found his true calling in sustainability research, particularly in sustainable development and the fight against global warming. UC Merced's commitment to this field made it the perfect choice for his graduate studies.
Mentorship and Research Focus
At UC Merced, Jose found an invaluable mentor in Professor James Palko of the Mechanical Engineering department. Under Palko's guidance, Jose has been deeply involved in sustainability research in agriculture for the past five years. "His continued support has been invaluable, and I am forever grateful for his guidance, expertise, and patience," Jose shared.
Jose's current research focuses on mitigating freshwater usage and potentially meeting increasing produce demands by utilizing evaporative cooling in greenhouses with high salinity drainage water. His innovative approach aims to address the limitations of current systems that produce concentrated brine byproducts, developing a zero-liquid discharge system that allows for full evaporation of drainage water, recovery of salts and minimized environmental impact.
A Commitment to Climate Action
Jose's dedication to sustainability extends beyond his research at UC Merced. Recently, he was accepted as a Lawrence Livermore National Lab (LLNL) Climate Entrepreneurs Fellow as part of the UC Climate Action Initiative. This experience provided him with entrepreneurship training and the opportunity to work with leading experts in world-class facilities.
"It was an eye-opening experience that has strengthened my commitment to fostering climate resilience in all aspects of my work," Jose reflected. "Looking ahead, I'm excited to apply what I've learned as I continue my path forward towards a sustainable and bright future."
