Research Proposal for Advancement to Candidacy Course

This two-credit course is designed to support PhD students in planning, drafting, and refining their qualifying exam proposal—one of the most important milestones in their doctoral
journey. Through weekly discussions, guided writing sessions, and peer feedback, students will develop each core section of the proposal, including the research aim, background, proposed tasks, preliminary results, methodology, expected outcomes, risk mitigation strategies, and timeline.

The course also includes structured preparation for the oral presentation component of the qualifying exam, with dedicated time for slide design, communication strategies, and mock talks. By the end of the semester, students will have a polished, advisor-reviewed proposal draft and a well-rehearsed presentation ready for committee review.
