Director of Pre-Law Studies to Tackle Racism at Sacramento City Unified School District

UC Merced’s Director of Pre-Law Studies Mark Harris is taking on a new position to help address racism at Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD).

Officials for the school district created a new position for Harris as district liaison to provide independent recommendations to the district on investigations and racist incidents.

Give to UC Merced 2021 Raises Nearly $230,000 in Campus Support

In December, the Give to UC Merced 2021 fundraising initiative surpassed the targeted goal of $100,000, garnering a total of $227,569 to support programs and people throughout the university.

Give to UC Merced 2021 was the second year in a row that the initiative has been held over an entire month, having expanded from a single-day event. Nearly 24 percent of the donors were campus friends, 23 percent were staff and faculty, 17 percent were UC Merced alumni, 17 percent were parents and 19 percent were students, with several donors giving multiple gifts.

Pay it Forward During “Give to UC Merced” Monthlong Virtual Fundraiser

As a way to help students reach their academic goals, UC Merced is inviting campus supporters to virtually come together and take part in the “Give to UC Merced” initiative.

For a second year, the traditional 24-hour period of giving held the Tuesday after Thanksgiving will be expanded through the whole month of December. The event will begin Tuesday, Nov. 30, and end Friday, Dec. 31.

Governor Announces State Funding for UC Merced’s Medical Education Building

Gov. Gavin Newsom, speaking at UC Merced on Monday, announced that the state will support the building of the university’s new medical education building.

The Health, Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education Building will support a B.S.-to-M.D. joint degree program with UCSF-Fresno, starting in 2023, along with public health and psychological sciences faculty and students.

“We hope that students stay in the Valley and serve the people who made their education possible. To develop the talent, it takes time. But this is the beginning,” Newsom said.

UC Merced Launches Initiative to Aid Fleeing Afghan Scholars

The recent takeover of Afghanistan by Taliban forces has caused many Afghans to flee their homes searching for asylum.

Responding to the urgency of the current situation in Afghanistan, UC Merced’s Center for the Humanities has joined the rest of the UC campuses in starting a campaign to help Scholars at Risk (SAR) save the lives of scholars in the region, as well as in other turbulent areas of the world.

UC Merced Makes Princeton Review ‘Green Honor Roll,’ Remains Consistent on International Young University Rankings

UC Merced’s superb sustainability and environmental reputation continue to be a powerhouse, with The Princeton Review placing the campus among only three UCs on its ‘2022 Green Honor Roll.’ The campus also remains on the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings at No.3.
