"Lessons in Seeing," a film by Yehuda Sharim

January 25, 2018 - 7:00pm to 9:30pm

The Global Arts Studies Lecture Series 2017-18 invites you to a film screening of "Lessons in Seeing," followed by Q&A with the filmmaker Dr. Yehuda Sharim and producer Yan Digilov.

The film tells the story of Sibhatleab Mebratu, an aging math teacher who spent 25 years as a political prisoner and refugee in Ethiopia. During his first year in Houston, Sibhatleab visits Salem Market, a store that caters to Houston's diverse African communities. The film depicts his journey in a new country, his struggles with eviction and his love of math in the summer before a contentious election amid growing anti-refugee rhetoric.
